Amnesty International has launched an on-line URGENT TWITTER ACTION to urge
Iran to halt imminent execution of Aref Hamidian tomorrow 20 April.
On 13 April UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and three UN
The Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Situation in Iran, Dr. Ahmed Ashid,
Rapporteur on Torture and the Rapporteur on Arbitrary Detention and Executions
issued an urgent appeal to Iran on Aref Hamidian's case.
Iran's Judicial authorities told the family they would execute Mr. Aref
Hamidian, 25, son of Saeed (aka Lafta) and father of two next week. He, also
family's sole breadwinner, was arrested last year and charged with drug
trafficking charges a charge used by Iran to silence Ahwazi rights activists.
He's been sentenced to death by Revolutionary Court in Ahwaz city with no right
of appeal or any access to legal representation or fair hearing.
In the last past few weeks Iran has intensified its crackdown on Ahwazi
protesters and rights activists by broadcasting forced televised confessions on
sate television and death sentences for activists in order to spread fear among
Arab residents and thwart them from organizing protests ahead of the April 15,
commemoration of uprisings that took place in several Ahwazi cities in 2005 in
protest against a government program designed to change the demographic
structure of areas dominated by ethnic Arabs. According to that government
plan, ethnic Arabs would become a minority within 10 years.
